Attendees Adam - Stock Turbo record car as you may recall from the SpecialtyZ Blog here. DrDCanAceU - Dr. Dean and his black beast with SZ EXP-90 Turbos. Profile here.
Normally at this time of year we're waiting for a private drag event or competition but this time we decided to slum it at the first public event of the season. Notorious for being overcrowded, we weren't expecting to get many runs in but it looked promising with a low turnout (big football weekend) and cool weather. That said, a slippery track and numerous crashes/mishaps left the gang with only a few runs.
First up was Adam and his stock turbo Z. His goal for the day was breaking into the 11s but he had an uphill battle with it only being his second time dragging the Z, a slick track and only a few attempts. That said, he started off great with a 1.8" 60' (5-speed) but missed 4th leaving him with a 12.034 @ 113mph. We joked in the pits that he should have removed his passenger seat but being the guy he is, he wanted to do it complete.
So out he went again, putting up a blistering 119mph trap speed for stock turbos except it was spin-happy, leading to a 12.033. Just a thousandth of a second off the first run. Poor bastard was right there! With the day coming to an end he decided to pull out everything and we discovered not only did he have the spare tire in, he had all the tools/jacks/accessories in the back this whole time. Despite hustling to get back in line to take one last crack at it, they turned him away. Still a great job overall and with practice that thing will easily be into the 11s!
Next up was Dean. He had his own issues to start out the day (nitrous system out of commission) but he turned a bad situation into a good one with a new personal best off the juice. In fact, he was nearly booted off the track as the trap speed limit for a non-full caged car is 134.99mph.
Dean, who the track officials had previously nicknamed "Trouble" lived up to his name with a 10.5 @135.00 on the nose, resulting in a strict warning. Another thousandth of a second if you can believe it. Even after lowering the boost, he still got another 10.5 @132mph with a sub-par 60' time. So all in all we learned something new about his car today. It has low 10s in it off the juice (boost up) and more than ever, it definitely has 9s at full strength. 2011 will be the year!
Anyway, not a bad first outing and surely not the last. We hope to be out again in March when the better events start up. Thanks to Brooke@SpecialtyZ who came out for support and to Adam for driving out from Arizona. Good to see you all!
